Are you thinking about upgrading your conventional analog surveillance system to high definition? But it seems difficult to decide which HD-over-coaxial technology to use.

AHD is a new HD CCTV standard developed by Korean chip manufacturer NextChip. AHD provides 720p max resolution output and long video transmission distances (up to 500 meters over traditional coaxial cable). AHD is also compatible with traditional analog equipment in limited configurations.

1. High Definition

High definition (HHD) is a video resolution that offers higher image quality and clarity than standard definition. It has a larger number of pixels and is used in TVs, monitors, digital cameras, and video game consoles.

Ensure you are buying an AHD camera that uses high-quality components to ensure reliability and longevity. This will minimize future maintenance costs.

4. Open Standard

Many users are confused when they decide to upgrade their existing analog video surveillance system with HD over coax cameras. Since there are multiple HD over coax camera standards (AHD, CVI, TVI), end-users can’t decide which one is the right choice for their application.

The answer to this question depends on your priority: if you prioritize analog video quality, cost-effectiveness, or ease of installation/upgrade, AHD might be the right solution for you. Likewise, if you want to monitor high-resolution footage on traditional CRT monitors, CVI or TVI is the right option for you.

Also, you need to consider the coax cable compatibility and power supply requirements of your system. Make sure the chosen technology can run on your existing coax cables (up to 320 Meters / 960 Feet at 720p with RG59) or use twisted pair cable with video baluns (maximum up to 150 meters without loss). Lastly, you must evaluate whether or not the selected camera supports GPS for driver monitoring, which is pivotal in curbing commercial vehicle drivers’ dangerous driving behaviors due to drowsiness and inattention.

5. Interoperability

Unlike IP cameras, many cutting-edge features like multi-exposure wide dynamic range (WDR) and edge storage are not yet available with HD analog systems. However, decreasing product prices and better industry support are driving HD analog adoption in some markets.
