THX® Certified

The THX 4K HDR certification process requires that displays meet specific requirements to prove that they deliver a wider color gamut than traditional LCD and OLED screens, and that their white levels match those of the editors and colorists who worked on the content. These tests ensure that the images shown on a THX certified projector are accurate, sharp and crisp.

DLP® 4K UHD HDR

DLP® 4K UHD HDR uses Texas Instruments’ XPR Technology to display a native resolution of 3840×2160 pixels on screen. This is a significant step up in pixel density from the previous generation of DLP projectors, which only used about 2K.

The XPR system increases the number of pixels onscreen by rapidly shifting the position of each individual mirror on the DMD chip. This is called pixel shifting and it doubles or quadruples the DMD chip’s native resolution of 1920×1080. This allows for a more accurate image without the need to increase the size of the DMD chip itself.

During our testing of the JVC LX-NZ30, we found that the projector produced very accurate color and detail. This was particularly apparent with our tests of moving content where fine text was easily readable on the JVC, blurred and unreadable on the Epson, and softened to the point where it was barely recognizable on the Sony 2K projector.

The JVC’s brightness of 3,000 lumens also made it easy for the projector to produce a good HDR image. Even after calibration the projector’s tone mapping did a good job of balancing screen brightness and producing bright highlight detail. The LX-NZ30 is also a ‘Fit and Forget’ projector as it uses the JVC’s BLU-Escent laser light source technology that provides 20,000 hours of lamp life.

CinematicColorTM Technology

The CinematicColor technology in this model produces an image that’s noticeably brighter and richer in color than a conventional projector, making it ideal for large-screen movie viewing or gaming. Unlike many competing models, it does not limit itself to standard SDR video formats but instead supports both HDR10 and HLG content—both of which provide higher peak brightness than typical SDR content. In our tests, it also produced good color accuracy and excellent shadow detail for both SDR and HDR, delivering the kind of high-contrast, dramatic image that makes 4K so impressive.

This bare-bones projector is light on smart features and doesn’t support Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. But it’s an excellent choice for people who are mostly interested in the image quality, and the fact that it doesn’t require a separate media box or external speakers can save some money. It is the lightest projector on our list, weighing in at just over six pounds. It also offers automatic vertical keystone correction, which is helpful for reducing the need to tilt or move the projector. It’s also the only projector on our list to offer HDMI input lag measurements, which are important for gamers.

This projector is a top pick because of its excellent image quality, including a high contrast LED 4K outdoor projector ratio that delivers stunning black levels. It’s also a very bright projector, with a maximum brightness rating of 2,700 ANSI lumens, enough to comfortably use in well-lit rooms. Its out-of-the-box color accuracy is excellent, although purists may want to consider buying a third-party calibration device to improve its colors even more.

HLD LED

Getting a projector bright enough for a large screen in a light-controlled room requires high lumens. A good reference is a brightness of 1,500 ANSI lumens for a 4K projector. The HT9060 from BenQ achieves this brightness with its ColorSpark HLD LED illumination engine. It also delivers the Ultra-Wide DCI-P3 color gamut and superb image quality for a dedicated home theater.

The HLD LED (High Lumens Density) engine works by using blue LED’s to pump a phosphor rod. This phosphor then emits 560-nanometer green light. This results in a significantly higher light output for the projector – 2X compared to typical LED engines while maintaining the same LED etendue.

This technology allows manufacturers to reach a brightness level close to 3000 ANSI lumens and possibly higher in the future. This is a major breakthrough as LED projectors have been limited in brightness by the amount of light they can efficiently couple onto the imager chip.

This newest illumination engine offers significant value over lamp-based models in this price range as it combines high brightness with excellent HDR and wide color gamut performance. However, the HT9060 is significantly more expensive than many other LED-powered 4K UHD HDR projectors with similar features and specifications. Is this premium projector with its long-life HLD LED illumination, 3D capability, pixel-shift technology and CinematicColor technology worth the extra expense?
